Novation, in cooperation with Cisco Systems, has successfully concluded the proof of concept (PoC) RailNET over a number of stations corresponding to Metro Madrid line 3. RailNET will make it feasible to assess a number of technology solutions in a real railway environment.

Novation has developed and implemented a novel ultra-high bandwidth train-to-track communication system that will enable the integration of rolling stock on-board systems within Metro Madrid owned TI infrastructure.

The RailNET PoC has effectively demonstrated how value-added railway operation services can be implemented over high performing train-infrastructure communications.

Within the implemented and proven services, the following can be found:

• • • Ultra-high bandwidth train-to-track communications system, based upon 802.11ac standards (Wifi / IP), that provide very high performing effective bandwidth communication channels between train and infrastructure, thereby reaching up to 300Mbps.

• • • On-board cloud computing systems (Train Cloud), thus permitting the development and implementation of heterogeneous systems in demanding environments. This is regarded as one of the main building blocks for Digital Train paradigm.

• • • On-board Voice systems, featuring uninterrupted communication with the train control centre and full integration with voice corporate systems.

• • • Mobile Voice systems.

• • • High Definition (HD) CCTV systems, featuring real-time low-latency transmission of images from train to infraestructur systems, including real time video visualization from train control centre.

• • • Collection, storage and processing of on-board data for operation and/or maintenance support, thereby allowing the implementation of the Digital Train paradigm.
